It was sad this morning to learn that the trapped New Zealander miners are in all likelihood dead and I feel for all those who grieve for them.
When thirty three men were trapped underground in Chile, comments were made about the low standard of safety regulation that may have contributed to the cause of the accident. It is ironic that, by contrast, New Zealand has among the highest and yet it was impossible to prevent the explosions there and rescue the miners alive.
I wrote yesterday about the tommyknockers, earth spirits which can cause the earth to move, and of how important it is to do any sort of activity connected with the inner worlds of Gaia in a spirit of co-operation and respect. In days long gone by it was customary to give offerings to placate the gods, and until quite recently country folk worked with the land in conscious harmony with the elementals and according to the cycles of the moon, the sun and of nature.
Much of this has been forgotten in the demand for intensive large scale and chemical-driven farming in so many parts of the world. Outer space is littered with debris from man’s curiosity, the seas are contaminated by a shipping and fishing regime which is out of hand, and the desire for the life blood and jewels of this beautiful planet - oil, gas, minerals and soon water - is hurting her terribly.
This oblivion to the needs of Gaia is another example of how separated we, as a human race, have become from the environment which nurtures and protects us. Until we learn to feel the connection, to be in balance with it, to seek to live in harmony with it, Earth, and even the cosmic worlds beyond, will continue to remind us of how it was, and how it can be again: spirituality personified.
