The political situation in America is a wonderful example of how, with expectation, comes disappointment.  A year ago, when Obama was inaugurated as president, not just Americans but many world observers believed that social change of great magnitude would transform the consciousness of humanity as a result of the election of this visionary black president. Expectations could not have been higher, and when transformation did not occur immediately the disappointment and didillusionment has been all the greater.

Part of this is due to the populist electioneering promises of the democratic campaign, also the charisma of the man, and part of this is due to many people crying out for change but without understanding the realities of the situation. Promises have been broken or left unfulfilled, but they were promises that could not have been fulfilled easily in the first place.

Now, expectation is being replaced by cynicism or criticism, and there is much judgment.  I hope in time that pragmatism, realism and honesty will prevail instead. Meanwhile, there is much for each of us to remember about setting expectations, and making easy pledges.
