Minamisanriku is one of many villages that was devastated in the March tsunami which changed Japan. It is coming back to life, but with a difference: karmic lessons have been learned - for now.
Before the great tidal wave halted Japan and shocked the world, the fishing towns which lay along the north east coast were notorious for excessive fish farming of tuna and shark, and environmentalists had for years been expressing serious concern about the numbers and methods of fish farming employed by the Japanese. It was a lucrative business which depended on the sea for success, and it was the sea which destroyed it, giving respite to the inhabitants of the waters and time for reflection to the people who survived. It was karma visibly in action.While the lands around Minamisanriku cannot be farmed still and the few homes and shops which remain are uninhabitable, the fishing industry is starting to revive, but with a difference. In the town centre a plaque has been erected in honour of the sea: on it, a public pledge has been made that the people there will respect the waters from now on and will honour the creatures that live within them. There is a recognition that through consideration and co-operation a peaceful co-existence can be achieved which will benefit man and the environment.
If the karmic lessons taught to the Japanese by the tsunami are learned fully, it will be wonderful. The Lords of Karma have a habit, however, of springing unexpected tests of our past and present learnings on us to see how well we have remembered: if the Japanese, despite their present good intentions, slip back into carelessness, the reminder could be painful indeed.
