I have been reminded of how much the loss of our pets can bring grief and pain a number of times this week, and several times this year through the experiences of clients and friends. The wave of departures has been remarkable, not just for the number of animals moving on, but also for their special nature: each one that I have known or know of has been extraordinary in its own way, perhaps through personality or longevity, and the unique nature of its soul. Like you and me, and everyone, the souls of pets differ one from the other, some young, some old, some dormant - but this year, this week, I have seen some mighty animal souls go Home.
Every one of the human guardians of these departed ones is special too, appropriately so since the relationship between the owner and such pets is timeless and enduring beyond death, based on love and the desire to help the other in the team. People talk of an animal being "almost human", but this underestimates greatly the gifts it has and brings; it is no coincidence that now, at this time, certain ones are reincarnating in human form, just as some humans are, in fact, behind the skin, animals.
It is not surprising, therefore, that a wise and ancient pet soul captures the heart of its caring owner, and that its inevitable demise, always coming too soon for us, can hurt terribly.
When grieving the loss of a pet, it can help to remember earlier days when it was young and healthy, in its prime and loving life, and to know that the bond between you will endure always, in all lifetimes together; just as you opened your heart to it, it loves you non-judgmentally and unconditionally, wherever it is, and will do so always.

Thanks, Claire, for reminding me of my feline friend Voltaire (whom I have mentioned to you before), who passed on in November 2005. He is still with me, and in a way it's like reliving the old film 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir'.
