The Last Scottish King[/caption]
The great debates about Scottish independence have forced us to see the inequities in the present system of government in the UK, and to recognise that whatever happens in the Scottish vote, the processes that have served us for many decades are irrelevant and must be replaced. Political inadequacy based on Westminster not regional needs has been highlighted, and will not be tolerated any more. It is time for change.
The weight on my heart comes from the knowledge that, in Scotland tomorrow, half the population will be rejoicing while the other half will be in despair. This has been a campaign based on hope and emotion, and also fear, strong feelings that may erupt into violent expression if the result is, seemingly, unfavourable. Recriminations will abound north and south of the Scottish border, and in Parliament, and it may be an uneasy, painful time. I feel for those who will hurt tomorrow.
My lightness comes from the knowledge that change is on its way as a result of the Referendum. Some of the change will be visible, but other aspects of it will be more subtle, just as the movement of the bat returning to its roost each morning seems to be something of nothing, but actually touches other worlds far away.
The bat accepts that change is inevitable from time to time, and that it is part of the evolution of its life. The same can be said for Scotland, and for all of us.
