Archaeologists say that they have uncovered, in what was a scribe’s workplace 1200 years ago, magnificent paintings and numerical calculations, the oldest known Mayan astronomical tables ever found. Not only were they found by chance but the state of preservation, in an area of lowland rain forest where little survives the heat and weather, was unprecedented. It should not have happened.
These facts in themselves make the finding miraculous, but for me what is most exciting is that among the calendars found is one which projects 4000 years into the future beyond 2012. Until now, the Mayan calendars known to us ended on 21st December this year, and many pessimists saw this as indicating the end of the world rather than (as I see it) a time of breaking with the past and the beginning of a new era of the unknown – a new spiritual era where anything can happen, full of limitless possibilities.
So, we know now that the Mayans predicted our planetary destiny far into the future, and it will be fascinating to learn what the writings, still being deciphered, will tell us. It is a miracle of discovery and one in a line of revelations that are being given to us at this important time of transition. It is all so very interesting, is it not?]]>
