A Watery August Moon

The energy of the place feels very still………

The Full Moon on Monday is known as the Sturgeon Moon because the month of August was known for the quantity of sturgeon fish in the lakes and rivers of North America.  The abundance may be rather less these days, which gives us food for reflection.

The watery theme this year is emphasised by the Moon’s position in Aquarius, flanked too and influenced by Leo and Uranus with the trickster Mercury running retrograde in the background.  It is a challenging astrological line up whereby issues of power, innovation and emotion clash and chaos is the result:  change may be forced upon us and our comfort zones tested to the extreme.

Because I live in a place where the Element of Water is prominent through the river that envelops my home and the ponds that are a central feature of the land, it would be unsurprising if this austere Sturgeon Moon period did not impact me, as it may you too.  The reminder of its meaning came unexpectedly last week when a plumber, asked here to repair a leaking tap, not only failed to do the repair but left having severed the supply of water into my home.  Perhaps a little embarrassed he has not returned, and while we await another craftsman to repair the damage, we are thankful for and dependent on a working outside tap to provide the water we need to live.

While disconcerting and uncomfortable, the situation has been a reminder of how people used to live until recent times - and in some places still do - collecting water from a well or stream to cook and wash.  We have developed a rhythm of regular re-filling of jugs, kettles and buckets as soon as they are emptied, of minimising cooking and washing up, and of saving every drop of water frugally.  It is noticeable how quiet our home is without taps running, loos flushing and water tanks filling up, and the energy of the place feels very still.

Other people have had similar or tougher challenges, and we are fortunate in that we have our outside tap, the borehole is working, that it is summer, and that the problem will be fixed.  It could have been far worse.  In a microblog that I posted recently on social media I talked about the importance of getting your house in order, now, and the accident to the water supply is a reminder to me that I have work to do in this regard too.

So often we take water for granted.  I hope that I will remember to be thankful when I turn on a tap and see water flow from it, and I can have a bath again.  No doubt the gods are laughing as we stumble round with our pails, living through a turbulent, testing Sturgeon Moon in the way they have chosen to give us as our present learning.

I hope your tests are kinder; whatever they are, they will be right.

  1. How exciting an experience of having to get water outside your home..reminds me of when i volunteered at a few off grid communities, including one in set up phase that had little `infrastructure` when i was there. I loved the experiences of getting water from the outdoor tap. splitting the logs and gathering kindling for the fire. My desire is to live more simply at some point in the future. Much of our so called luxuries are taken for granted now and what amazes me is although these benefits should save us much time...the so little time we seem to have. When i returned to visit Wales and the community i worked for I was asked wether I wanted to do the OPD,[off grid creating a business model that 75% of ones income is from the land after 5yrs] one planet development! I did say i thought I would have been more intreasted 12yrs ago and felt it was too much work for one person. Simplicity with connection with nature when one needs to do these basic things is just very fulfilling and provides richness ive seldom experienced living when everything is provided....intreasting,

    1. Thank you Sat Kartar, and for your understanding of the blessings in this situation! Yes, it makes life very simple and peaceful to be without water. We chop wood anyway!
