Angelina Jolie's Moment of Truth

For a film star admired for her face and figure to undergo such a personal procedure and to announce it in the media as she did, with the aim of helping other women who might similarly be confronted with a genetic predisposition to breast cancer, was selfless and courageous, for she will have known that it would change the way her fans think of her for some time until she is remembered for something else - perhaps even for helping "normalise" a much feared issue in the longer term. She chose to lose her breasts rather than to have to face the almost certainty of the breast cancer which killed her mother: she did not want her children to be motherless as she was, and she chose life over looks and publicity over privacy in order to enlighten others. Even though she had the support of a loving family and the best treatment money could buy, it must have been a lonely journey. It has become increasingly clear that Angelina Jolie is not just a beautiful celebrity actress: her controversial but moving film about the Bosnian war and her efforts to raise awareness about refugees and sexual violence shows her compassion and humanity, and even while she was undergoing the mastectomy and reconstruction surgery between February and April, she visited the Congo with William Hague and attended the G8 summit to highlight, successfully, her concerns about sexual abuse in conflicts. Many women will be given hope and new awareness about breast cancer through her example, and others more, men and women, will think about femininity and what it means in a different way. Beauty is far more than just a body, as she has proved, again.  ]]>
