Over the years she and I had had many conversations about life after death. I am sure there is an afterlife, that the soul never dies but progresses to new experiences including new human lives as part of its endless journey to infinity, but she was firm in her certainty that her human life was the only one, and that when it was done there would be nothing beyond. As I have felt her slipping away, I have smiled to think of her surprise at finding herself alive still albeit without a body, and in a different but familiar dimension. She will laugh too.
It may be because of her belief in the one life that she resisted dying fiercely. There were moments of anger; of entering into a coma but forcing herself out of it in case the deep sleep led to nothingness; there was restlessness, and dispute between the weakening body, the strong mind and the longing of her soul to make the final break with its human shelter. Eventually the mind and the body conceded the supremacy of the higher self, and Spirit took over - and that is when the joy of the release of her humanity began for her.
It was a perfect death, quick, almost painless, loving, spiritually challenging but ultimately blissful. How happy she will be now.

With regard to the issue of life after death, channeller Jane Roberts of the Seth books fame channeled the early American psychologist William James. He, too, had some interesting things to say about life after death:
