Prayer in a Divided World

Everything, however wild or weedy, has its place in this order of dreams.

From my window I see robins diving in and out of an old tussocky ant hill where their young are waiting to be fed; redstarts with their flickering tails and bandit eyes have built a nest in a small side roof over the garage, with blackbirds alongside them in the old camellia where they breed every year.  The weeping birch is filled with the sparkle of newly fledged pied flycatchers and dunnocks, happy that the abundance of insects in the trees and nearby ponds means food is close by and they are safe within the branches.

Despite the lack of rain the garden is lushly green and rich with life, and there is a sense of God smiling upon His creation as the blessing of Lord Buddha, bestowed upon us ten days ago at Wesak, becomes embedded where it needs to be.  Everything, however wild or weedy, has its place in this order of dreams.

The contrast between the tranquillity of Gaia’s Earth, when it is encouraged to flourish naturally, and the disorder of what is outside it is stark.  We are seeing the separation of what once was whole into two distinctly different manifestations, and it can be hard to remember that Spirit is in the flawed world of human ego as much as it is the healing world of nature.  War, starvation, suffering, lying are ugly but need to be noticed not ignored, for how else can they be changed??  How else can we learn from them if we do not look?

And in looking and seeing, let us do so without judgment but with the greatest compassion, knowing that thereby we are doing God’s work, and knowing too that one day this tarnished material life will be a footnote in the history of planetary evolution to divinity.  Earth’s soul learns most through hard lessons, as do the souls of each of us.  Harsh thoughts help no-one.

Remember, meanwhile, the power of prayer and that to be most effective our devotions should be heartfelt and made with thanks for (not wishful for) the fulfilment of what concerns us, such as recovery from illness, or the healing of a land.  Choose your prayers wisely, not just what is easy or obvious, and as you give with love, feel in return the love of God and Gaia upon you.
