Gaia weeps[/caption]
I am reflecting still on the meaning of these words, which I take to be a literal and metaphorical anticipation of what the year to come will bring. So often we look at events in the world with human eyes and judgment, imagining how we would feel living in Syria, for example, or surrounded by Ebola victims – feeling sympathy and probably also gratitude that it is far away from our relatively comfortable lives. How often do we go deeper, feeling the relentless pain of a mother dying in childbirth for lack of care; feeling for the dog maimed by a bullet, homeless and starving; for the child gang-raped and brutalised by a plundering army; for a planet squandered and abused by its guardians almost to the point of extinction?
When was the last time you thought about how Gaia feels? Earth is the most beautiful planet in our solar system, full of riches: we are so blessed to live here – but we dishonour our greatest gift constantly, and if this trait continues it will be taken from us. Gaia weeps indeed, for the hurt we inflict upon her, and in time we will see her tears welling from all the fissures of the earth. We will see her pulse beating hard, causing the ground to tremble and react, and we will see the fire of her anger when our carelessness has gone too far.
Gaia watches and waits, but she feels, meanwhile, as she goes forgotten by so many except for what they can take from her. Just as a mother weeps when she is abandoned by her child, so Gaia weeps for the suffering of her beloved Earth, and for her betrayal by we, who are, supposedly, her stewards. Let her tears be tears of healing and not of punishment; let her waters be the givers of life and not of death; and let her gifts be honoured, and not used as weapons of war. We have gone too far, and it is time to for sense to prevail.
