Opportunities for spiritual growth come constantly, gifts from Spirit which often we fail to appreciate through the distractions of being human. This period of new year, reflection and resolution is just such a time.
The original meaning of "resolution" was, in Latin, to do with releasing and letting go rather than the context in which it is used now, of determination and tenacity in the sense usually of self-improvement. The latter is about burdens (for when is a new year's resolution enjoyable?!) and failure when the commitment falls away as so often it does; the original meaning is about leaving behind that which no longer serves, and claiming your freedom. The one imposes burdens, the other removes them. Which do you prefer?As you stand at the brink of a new year at a time of momentous and marvellous change, you may wish to consider what you wish to release from your life and beingness, now. What does liberty, spiritual and temporal independence, mean for you? How does it show itself in your life? How could it?
I encourage you to step forward towards the finale of the epic play in which you have such a major part, as free from encumbrance as it is possible to be. Be light of heart and filled with a spirit of adventure, and above all have no fear. This is your chance for spiritual advancement such as you have never, ever known before in all your many lives of experience and learning. Know too these final acts can be easy - for that is your gift and your reward from God. Let this be your new year's resolution for 2012.
