Bird choices

Yesterday I found the bodies of three birds clustered together beneath my greenhouse.  They had been dead for a few days, and sadly one of them was a yellowhammer, which is an endangered species now.  I believe that they had chased into some bushes nearby when a sparrowhawk flew through in chase, and then crashed into the clear windows of the greenhouse as they tried to return.

It was a sorry sight, but a good reminder to me first all birds have the same value, just as humans do, and the fact that the yellowhammer is scarcer than a chaffinch doesn't make them more important.  Secondly, these birds had chosen to die in the way they did - just as humans do.  The sparrowhawk could have been successful in his hunt for a meal, and it may have been one of them, or they could have perished in the cold winter.  This was the way they chose to die.

Indirectly I was responsible for the deaths, because the birds were only in my garden to take the food I put out for them - and I had put up the glass barrier in their flight path.  Some years ago the incident would have distressed me very much, but now I try to accept these occurrences with equanimity, albeit tinged with sadness at the loss of any beautiful creature.  They died quickly and painlessly, and had lived happy lives.

I put their little bodies in the field where other birds can find them to use their feathers to line their nests and insects can feed from them.  I have also put up red ribbons on the greenhouse glass to alert other birds to its presence.  It is up to them now to decide how far to take notice of it, or not.
