Climate Change, and the Spirit of Weather

It is accepted that man-made emissions and other neglect of Earth, like cutting down rain forests, has disrupted the cycle of nature and affected our weather. Additionally, and importantly, however, we have not only separated ourselves from Gaia, but we have forgotten that man has an ancient bond with the Spirit that is in everything around us, including the elements. In our blindness and self-belief, we have broken the link that connects us with those planetary gifts that support us in every way, while continuing to take what we want but without thanks. An analogy of this scenario is a marriage where one partner strips the other of everything he or she has that is worthwhile, demanding money, attention, possessions and love while giving nothing back except disrespect. In the end the abused spouse is pushed into breaking down, retaliating, or leaving. Which one will it be for Gaia, I wonder? Some of the more aware individuals amongst us do what they can to support and communicate with plants and animals, with the earth, the trees, the waters and the mountains, but few of us remember that every aspect of weather has its own Spirit presence too. Instead, we talk about it, often complain about it, sometimes fear it, or love it when it suits our needs and wishes, but too often we fail to honour it. A few ancient communities around the Planet understand still the importance of the weather for their survival and well-being, and they show their respect and love for the weather spirits through prayer and ritual because it is right, and because it works. We used to do so, but abandoned these practices many centuries ago, to our cost. As a result just like many abusive relationships, our weather is protesting to get our attention. The calls for co-operation have been getting louder over recent years as our neglect of nature generally has increased to dangerous levels through over-population, chemicals, plastics and greed, and there will be some mighty storms ahead. It is never too late for us to do some good, however, and by watching the weather with love and awareness, particularly when it does not suit us; by looking for the spirit visible in a cloud or a snowflake; by pondering the mood and message of the weather and what it means for us and the wider world; and by thanking the weather for the blessings it brings us, we can help to bring the weather, and the climate, back into harmony. It does not take many to achieve great change, if the will is there. Our weather is far more than the state of the atmosphere: it lives, and is part of Spirit. The future of climate change, and Earth, depends on its wellbeing – and what we are prepared to do about it.   [byline]]]>
