As the UK election gets close, I was interested to see that the Conservatives, still front-runners to win (though there may be some surprises), are using community-consciousness as one of the main planks of their campaign. How far they mean it is another matter, but the fact that, as a result, there is public discussion of the need for community responsibility, sharing and decision-making is encouraging. Already the ideas put forward are being branded impossible and unrealistic by those who are cynical or who have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.
The NHS has its flaws but it is nonetheless a concept that works and benefits many. In its day it was revolutionary, but the new ideas were allowed to be introduced despite the costs and doubts. Sometimes we need to take risks by moving into the unknown, overturning what is known and established and accepting failure is possible. This approach brings the biggest rewards - and it applies to us personally as well as to government.
Community is the future - let us make it the present.
