Of concern must be the divisions, even rifts, that are ever more evident as this messy, confused war continues - divisions not just within Syria itself but in a world where Iran, Russia and Lebanon's Hezbollah are actively involved for the government, and western countries are assisting the rebels and likely to be doing far more after the EU's lifting of the arms embargo; there are strengthening divisions between Russia and the EU now; the US disagrees with the new EU policy; the EU itself is split over what to do about Syria; and the neighbouring Arab states are manoeuvring for their own vested interests. It is an unfortunate backdrop to the Syrian Peace Conference in Geneva when a united front would have been helpful to encourage a diplomatic resolution.
It is a chaotic situation overall and a dangerous one as the weapons arriving in Syria or already there are traded or intercepted freely between all factions including terrorists, and Jihadi terrorism hits European and American cities. This is a time for calm wherever possible, and for a focused effort on peace rather than potentially inflammatory, or divisive, decisions.
One way or another Syria is a catalyst for world change, presenting stark choices and also opportunity for all who are touched by events in this troubled land - including you and me.
