I looked at my website last night and received quite a shock to see that the active moon icon at the bottom of the Home page was blacked out, and no information or image of the current moon phase was visible.
I made a mental note to check it in the morning and to get any fault corrected, but my sense of unease lingered. I reflected on my reaction during the night and realised it came from my sense of my relationship with the moon and a sense of loss. Visible or not the moon is always there, a counterpart to the sun and a reminder of mystery and magic, of dreams and the unknown, continuity and dependability, the determinant of tides and cycles, a lantern and talisman in the night sky. I love the moon, but for a while, symbolically, she was not there.
This morning the image of the moon as she is right now is visible again on my website. It may be it never disappeared but my eyes played tricks on me to remind me of her importance, and never to take her for granted. How would you feel to learn that our planet's moon had gone forever?
