I felt a strong sense of deja vu today when I heard that scientists have discovered how to change DNA to make artificial life. The implications are enormous, because it gives scientists and users the ability to create a tool both for benevolent use like consuming cancer cells or oil spills, and also for malign use like the ultimate weapon of mass destruction.
It is exactly this sort of discovery that precipitated the fall of Atlantis, hence deja vu. Here we are again, but this time we have the chance to let common sense and simplicity prevail.
The excitement about this discovery is an indication of how far we have forgotten the tools we have already that can do all that this synthetic DNA can do. Shamans can consume cancers to leave a healthy, healed body, and earth healers can purify waters of pollutants effectively. Many of the ancient skills now are in the hands and knowledge of just a few, but they are there still, being used mostly in remote indigenous populations, and the efficacy of their work goes largely ignored.
This is part of the choice before us, whether en masse to embrace the approach of simplicity - man working with nature and spirit for the good of all - or to put our trust in science, with all the costs, dangers, and vested power that goes with it. The genie is out of the bottle. What will we do with it?
