Silence is obliterated not just by the noise of life, but far more by the noise within. If we understood the value of silence, would it change our lives? For many people, probably not – and thereby they miss so much. Souls grow through the learning that comes from human experience and choice, and while such progression must be welcome, always, too often it comes at the expense of our connection with God. Focused as we are on living life, our absorption in our world of matter separates us from our higher self and more: by the time we realise the emptiness that accompanies this separation, and the joyful completion that comes from the integration of soul and individuality, it can be too late. [caption id="attachment_2547" align="alignright" width="225"] The Value of Silence[/caption] A lack of silence is the prerequisite to separation and the state of duality that is the hallmark and test of the human state. Some people blame a noisy environment for their inability to meditate, or for their stress, and they do not see that silence underpins all sound whether it is a siren, noisy neighbours or beautiful music. It is up to us as to whether we hear the sound or the silence, and if we allow our external environment to be a distraction or an excuse. Even more important is finding the silence within, quietening the chatter of the mind and disentangling from wanting, needing and desiring; from doing rather than being; from striving rather than accepting. The inspiring monk and spiritual writer Thomas Merton wrote: “You have made my soul for Your peace and Your silence, but it is lacerated by the nose of my activity and my desires. My mind is crucified all day by its own hunger for experience, for ideas, for satisfaction. And I do not possess my house in silence.” He spoke well. It is through silence that our souls grow best. It is through silence that we know God. It is through silence that we find our peace. [byline] ]]>
