The pleasure in simple Community Life

Sometimes simple things really are the best.

dsc_0053I live just outside a very small village in mid-Wales, but despite the tiny population and the lack of a pub or shops now, the community spirit is strong.  When bad weather comes along and maroons a number of us in our homes, as it does every year, those who can get out will shop for those who can’t, and we share.

We come together quite often too with suppers and events in the Village Hall. Last night we met around the Christmas tree to sing carols and then have a Bring and Share supper in the Hall with mulled wine. I was in two minds as to whether to go: it was an icy cold night and it had been a long day, but despite the temptation of a good fire I went, and I am so pleased I did.

As I stood by the tree near the old church surrounded by my neighbours I felt a sense of timelessness, a recognition that something like this has happened on that spot for countless years even perhaps going back to the time when a pagan place of worship stood where the church is now. I felt this sort of a coming together being replicated in villages and towns all over Britain and also in many other countries across the world. What we did was not fancy or even particularly devout. It was a simple and pleasurable evening with local people celebrating a special time of year quietly together, and as we sang and chatted about what was happening (important matters like someone’s new kitchen, the closure of the local bank, coping with the snow about to engulf us once again)wordless affection was exchanged.

We did not notice the cold, but we noticed each other. It was simple, kind and caring, and, being so, was profound in the extreme.
