All that I have is Yours

Forgotten too is the fact that they were said by Jesus in a prayer for his Disciples as he anticipated his departure from the world, and that the sentence went, “All that I have is yours, and all that you have is mine”. The prayer was addressed to God, heartfelt words of power and meaning from a great soul to the Keeper of Souls and the Holder of the Light. The prayer itself (John 17) is a deeply private expression of love, commitment, sadness and of a farewell to the world. So we often we use verbal expressions carelessly, creating confusion or pain as a result; when truthfully recorded, every word of Jesus was clear, concise and perfect for his message. Among his many lessons for us, was that it is better to say nothing than to use words wastefully or hurtfully. Silence is Golden. “All that I have….” , while part of the private prayer, is more than a statement of mutual devotion: it is another teaching from Jesus for we who were to read his words later about the importance of community and sharing, giving and receiving in a spirit of generosity. It teaches us, too, that no-one possesses anything or anyone – all that we have is a temporary part of our lives, on loan from God and to be used wisely, altruistically and gratefully. The deeper and fundamental lesson is that nothing and no-one is separate from anything or anyone else; everything is part of all that is, divine or dark. Peace comes from the knowledge that by accepting our shared responsibility for how it is within and without us, by acknowledging the divine within and without us, we are encouraging the Light of God to be ever stronger everywhere. That was the mission of Jesus, and that was his achievement. It was his legacy and also his instruction to we the disciples of this latest generation. All that I have is yours.     [byline]]]>
