Pondering the ominous alerts of impending storms and the need for preparedness led me to wonder what was the most precious thing in my life that I would hate to lose. It was a difficult question: the answer, I realised, was my home and all the life inside and outside it so there is no need for the escape grab bag I am encouraged to have ready. It may be a question you ask yourself on this day of warnings. ...

Spiritual leadership is much needed at this time, and so to learn that Pope Leo needs no further treatment for cancer is happy news in bleak times, whatever religious calling you may have. While his is seen as the face of God by many, do not forget that you too are God’s child and image on Earth. ...

Late last night I found a stag beetle tucked into a chair in my bedroom. As the light came on it stirred and woke, its head crowned with long antennae bowing, indeed, like a stag. The Importance of a Great Storm

As a great storm hovers over much of Britain, many people will remember tales of tempests of the past, such as the hurricane which hit the Welsh Valleys in 1913 with 160 miles per hour winds, or the even greater storm of 1703 which caused more damage and loss of life in the south than […]

The Truth about US Surveillance

US surveillance on rival countries is centre stage at the moment, as Angela Merkel and other EU leaders express outrage at the idea that their conversations have been intercepted by American eavesdroppers, but the truth, reluctantly but increasingly acknowledged, is that many developed countries do what they can to learn what others are planning, or […]

The Tragedy that is Child Abduction - Lessons from Maria

Until recently, few people realised the extent of the tragedy that is child abduction.  A few names are remembered, like Madeleine McCann and Ben Needham, but it was the reaction to the finding of little Maria, believed to have been taken by a Roma couple, that revealed how many children may have been stolen from […]

The Cosmic Power of Gold

Beyond El Dorado, reminded me about the cosmic power of gold and how far it has been forgotten, when once it was the most important aspect of civilisation. I would love to see the magnificent gold headdresses and ornaments of Columbian culture thousands of years ago, the lip and ear jewellery which covered the face […]
