Pondering the ominous alerts of impending storms and the need for preparedness led me to wonder what was the most precious thing in my life that I would hate to lose. It was a difficult question: the answer, I realised, was my home and all the life inside and outside it so there is no need for the escape grab bag I am encouraged to have ready. It may be a question you ask yourself on this day of warnings. ...

Spiritual leadership is much needed at this time, and so to learn that Pope Leo needs no further treatment for cancer is happy news in bleak times, whatever religious calling you may have. While his is seen as the face of God by many, do not forget that you too are God’s child and image on Earth. ...

Late last night I found a stag beetle tucked into a chair in my bedroom. As the light came on it stirred and woke, its head crowned with long antennae bowing, indeed, like a stag. It crawled onto a tissue I offered it and I placed it outside on the windowsill where it ambled away into the dark night. How it reached my room I do not know and never will, and the significance is a mystery – but significant it was, and I am grateful. ...

Politics and the Police: Lessons from Plebgate

Politics and the police make uneasy bedfellows, and the unravelling story of how a number of police officers, fiercely opposed to government policy on police funding and cuts, may have lied publicly in order to discredit the Chief Whip and the government itself, demonstrates the dangers of political bias in enforcing the law. It was […]

China Teaching the World about the Environment?

China and environmental consideration are not closely associated in the minds of many people except perhaps negatively, but it could be that China proves to be an important teacher to the world on matters to do with the environment – and soon. As Britain undertakes a high-level trade mission to China this week, there has […]

The Art of Forgiveness, in its Own Time

The art of forgiveness was a key theme when Terry Waite, held lengthy hostage in Lebanon 21 years ago, talked to some of the victims of the Westgate terrorist attack in Nairobi - survivors, and mourners for the loss of loved ones.  He was honest about his feelings and emotions during and after his long […]

The Loss of a Pet: Grief and Love

I have been reminded of how much the loss of our pets can bring grief and pain a number of times this week, and several times this year through the experiences of clients and friends. The wave of departures has been remarkable, not just for the number of animals moving on, but also for their […]

Simultaneous Dreaming, Giving the Lie to Time

Simultaneous dreaming is something I have wondered about before, but it was only last night that an ordinary experience helped me to confirm that we can, indeed, be in two dreams at the same time. At 3.30, I was awoken suddenly by the unusual sound of cars and voices in the lane below my home […]

Our Oceans under Threat – but There is Hope

It is sad to hear that our oceans are under threat, far more than has been understood before according to a new report by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean. The causes are over-fishing, fertiliser run-off, pollution and climate change, and these largely man-made problems provide conditions for the mass extinction of […]
