Amidst all the brouhaha about the Euro and politics, It was wonderful to hear on the BBC today serious discussion and advocacy about the importance of biodiversity.   One specialist in the subject said that it was as important as global warming since the survival of the human species depended on it.

The fact that preserving the ecological balance is beginning to be taken seriously is major progress.  As bees continue to decline, for example, and we are shown other results of taking nature for granted, we will be forced to re-prioritise more and more actively.

It is not just the farmers, businesses and politicians - we have a responsibility too. As you walk, look out for the smallest bug that may be in your path.  Its role is significant, and the loss of the species to which it belongs would make a terrible difference.  By treading on it carelessly, you may be killing more than just the bug.
