I have witnessed a number of events in the last few days which have caused me to reflect on the nature of rural life in the context of the new spiritual cycle under way now.
There is a wisely held belief that the greatest opportunities for spiritual growth lie through living within a remote rural idyll. I have written recently about the significance of the Elements, and indeed their presence, energy and power are often though not always at their strongest in the mountains, seas, clear skies and unspoilt lands. However, there are very few places on Earth where there are not humans, which can alter the spiritual perspective dynamically.
Indigenous peoples living lives according to the ancient traditions of their ancestors going back thousands of years are likely to honour and live in harmony with their nature environment, even if some of the practices themselves have been modernised. In the western world, often the awareness of this potential synergy is limited to the extent of being ignored, and great opportunities are missed.
Though they work and live with the land, for many (though not all) farmers it is just a commodity, a possession, a commercial proposition, and their focus is not mutual respect and co-operation but material gain derived from and at the expense of the land itself, the animals and plants and all the other resources for which they are guardians.
Materialism is not confined to bankers and capitalists, just as a love for the Planet is not confined to people who live in the country.Shades of light and dark are everywhere. Resistance to and acceptance of change is everywhere too. It is natural this is so, and it is part of the tests and the choices for humanity.
