Please spare a thought for Hungary today.
Devastating and lethal toxic waste from an aluminium plant has broken through a restraining dam and is pouring through land and villages now, entering water tributories to the Danube and threatening the Danube itself. Wherever the red sludge goes, serious contamination follows, and already homes and land are ruined, people have died and the clean waters yesterday filled with wildlife now are discoloured and dead.
In the summer, the waters of the Gulf of Mexico were pollluted by oil, and now it is another sort of pollution. The official cause of this second toxic spill is not yet known, but it should have been preventable - just as the BP spill should also. Hungary is a part of the EU now, and there are strict rules applying to the control and management of toxic waste. Let us hope that, from this tragedy, there is greater scrutiny of compliance in this area and measures are taken to ensure this kind of an incident can never happen again. Because, this time, humans have died, more notice may at last be taken of the environmental needs of our beautiful planet, and the responsibility we have for them.
