Myth and legend mingle freely with everyday life here in my sacred sanctuary of Wales, and today a small farm in remote Snowdonia is the focus of global attention for its historical and environmental importance, rightly so.
Llyndy Isaf farm has been managed by its caring owner with love and sympathy for the land and its story for decades, untouched by the intensive farming methods which have desecrated so much of our countryside for so long. The National Trust which has just bought the farm describe it as “an unspoilt gem” and home to many endangered wildlife species such as kingfishers, chough and otters.Other places in Wales also are of great environmental importance, but Llyndy Isaf farm is special for the legends associated with the land around it, one in particular: it is said that a great battle took place on a hill overlooking Llyn Dinas (a lake on the farm) between two dragons – the white dragon of the Saxons and the red dragon of the Celts; the white dragon was forced into the lake where it died, and the victorious red dragon became the national emblem of Wales. It is spoke of still, and the myth is much loved here.
Because it is so very unique, the National Trust ran one of its strongest campaigns to raise the funds to save it from commercial development and there was a determined response from the people of Wales to preserve and enhance its unspoilt nature and this place of legend. In a time of recession it is heartwarming to witness such love and response.
I believe in myth and legend, in which my home land of Wales is rich beyond belief. The Red Dragon symbolises Welsh pride and independence, courage and history, and symbolises also, for me, the spiritual roots that are embedded here. The Red Dragon walks these lands still, embedded in the heart of Wales but unseen and ghostly. One day not so far from now it will roam free once again and magnificently, guardian and protector not just of Wales but of the Plan of God.
