I have written recently about the importance of biodiversity for the survival of the planet and humanity, at a time when species are becoming extinct at a rate that is so fast it is unsustainable.

Against this background it is heartening to learn today that scientists from Conservation International who have been exploring in Papua have identified a number of birds and mammals that were hitherto unknown. The finds have been described as "stunning".

It is wonderful that nature can still surprise us, and that there are still secrets to discover on our planet.  There are many more yet to come, particularly relating to the sea bed and what lies beneath the earth, but that is for another day.  Meanwhile, let us hope that "the Lost World" of Indonesia where these latest discoveries were made will remain undisturbed by man, so that the fragile ecosystem will remain undisturbed in its perfection.
