Pope Francis and the Equinox

Apart from Prince Charles, it is rare to hear a public figure or leader defending Gaia, and so it was with pleasure that I heard Pope Francis, at his inauguration, call for protection of the environment. I hope everyone listens, but I suspect they will not. He spoke too of the need to care for the poor and the vulnerable: he did not say so in words, but his inference was that great numbers in our world are in need of being recognised and honoured by those who live comfortably, and if I look around our planet with my mind’s eye, I see in every country many people and creatures, plants and places which suffer neglect and disregard from those who could help; it is shocking to think that there are likely to be more living beings that are being hurt than there are men and women who do not want for food and shelter. Gaia’s population is many and varied, but it is only humankind which wreaks such damage on Her and on Her children. This new Pope is determined to convey his message of compassion and action at every opportunity, and it may be that the seeds which are his words become sown in the hearts of those who need reminding of our role as guardians of the Planet. He said that “power is in service”: I see power as being in thinking of others – including the natural world - and helping where we can, with kindness, which is not so very far from the urging of the Pope. Today is the Equinox, the day when night and day are equal and the centre of the Sun is in the same plane as the equator. It is a day of balance, typically associated with nature. It is a perfect time to reflect upon our abundance, and perhaps to consider how we may share it with those who are not so fortunate, whether it be a person who is homeless or a whale in distress from the constant noise of shipping. So many of us could do more. Claire Montanaro is a spiritual teacher, channel and blogger with special interest in esoteric philosophy and the world in transition. Loves nature and wildlife. 1. What about his stance on gay members of humanity? Whilst he mentioned protecting our environment he is not an advocate of equality for all mankind.

    1. Thank you. I agree, and I do not agree with his views when they are perpetuating Church orthodoxy, as I have said several times while recognising and applauding his teaching on simplicity and compassion for nature and the vulnerable. It is a step in the right direction at least!
