Smoke and mirrors

There is much excitement and anticipation in the UK today as Tony Blair prepares to give evidence about his (leading) part in the Iraq war of a few years ago.  It is likely that he will justify his decisions by citing all the improvements and benefits Iraq has gained as a result of the invasion and occupation, as he has done consistently when called to account before.

An expert on Iraq has taken the claims and analysed them.   It seems that if certain statistics are taken and used selectively they can "prove" what TB says.  However, in every case other reputable and validated statistics indicate that the situation in Iraq by way, for example, of infrastructure and mortality rates, are worse than before the war.

I do not know the truth here, though I have my own views.  I am discussing the matter now with you as another opportunity to reflect on the fine line between illusion and reality from the human perspective.  So many of our beliefs are formulated by assurances given in the media, or people we feel we can or should trust, by what we see and hear second hand.   A reporter who was said to be embedded with American marines during the Iraq war reporting from the front line, with dramatic camera shots and commentary, was later discovered to have falsified his reporting completely.  The camera shots of fighting and carnage were made up.  I wonder sometimes how much we see and read on the news is real at all.

In the end, the only reality is what we experience first hand, directly, and even then it can be misperceived or misunderstood by us.  This is why having no judgment is so important.  Tony Blair's intentions are his responsibiltliy alone, and it is not for us to judge him or them.  How we react, what we learn from great world events and what we do with them, that is our opportunity.
