The Irony of Independence Day

Independence Day…..a day which means little to most Britons now - though it did 235 years ago - but which has great significance still in the United States, and understandably so.

The events and outcome of the struggle of a number of British colonies to have self-governance separate from the authority of a distant world power changed history in many ways, and there is irony in the fact that this once British outpost of America is now in itself, for now, the world power.

Furthermore, while this dominant country has interceded increasingly frequently in the affairs of other nations in the name of enabling freedom, just as Americans fought for theirs centuries ago, I wonder sometimes how far its motives are totally altruistic and how far issues of power, control and money are the drivers for its involvement in the affairs of others. There is further irony in observing the reactions of those nationals who resent what they see as interference at best, a takeover at worst, of their occupied country, and who reciprocate accordingly, just as Americans did long ago in the War of Independence.

So many cycles and patterns and karmic interplay can be seen in the shifting kaleidoscope of history. Power here, power there, purity of intent then, tarnished values now, wealth the motivator in this time, altruism in time to come.

Nothing is right or wrong in what has happened before as the balance of power, literally, settles into an equilibrium of truth, fairness and kindness - not just in the United States, celebrating a day of national importance today, but everywhere in our world: we all are learning still about how and what to be, and there are good lessons for every one of us in the reminder of the true meaning of Independence Day.
