The Spiritual Essence of Water, and Man

The sound of water is everywhere as I write today in my Welsh sanctuary - rain mixed with melting snow dripping from the roof and of course the constant roar of the great River Wye in full spate accompanied by her daughter springs and fountains. Being someone who loves the elements, it gives me great pleasure to hear it and to be outside and a part of it.

Its destructive nature is another aspect of water, and I was reminded of this as I heard of the flash floods in the Philippines which have killed at least 200 people overnight. Flooding is such a regular occurrence these days, so frequent that a local disaster in a remote part of the world often goes unreported. I believe much rain is expected in parts of the UK in the near future, falling on lands already heavily waterlogged, and so it may be that water will cause my native land much damage too. It seems a strange contradiction that water is an absolute necessity for life, is beautiful in its own right and the most precious commodity on Earth, one day to be scarce, and yet it can be harsh, merciless in its power and sometimes to be feared - certainly always to be respected.

While water is one of the four elements of nature, along with earth, air and fire. It represents the emotions also, and it may be that the watery events we witness or experience so often are representative of the emotional learning and clearing being undergone by so many in the human race.  As part of our transition we are in a convulsion of upheaval, and water is responding.

At another level water also is the essence of Spirit. I remember this when I hear of or experience, as I have done,  substantial and tragic damage caused by water, whether it is the erosion of land, storms at sea, a tsunami or flooding from severe rains. Spirit does not cause these events or desire them - that is done by Gaia and Man - but, ultimately, Spirit ensures that all is very well, and that is great comfort for me.
