In the world of legend, tommyknockers are gnome-like earth spirits which originated in the ancient underground world of Celtic Wales and spread to mining communities in Cornwall and elsewhere, helping or hindering but certainly making their presence felt or heard.
It is not often that legends such as this are proven to be true, and I was delighted to hear a mining expert who was commenting on the mine explosion in New Zealand make reference to the fact that it may well have been caused by tommyknockers - sudden earth movement, he said, which created a pocket of gas. For me there is not much difference between this and an earth spirit - both are alive and are energetic and have a will of their own, and they cannot be controlled by man.
I invited you in my blog yesterday to look around you and to look beneath you to see what is there from other worlds. If you do so, remember the tommyknocker, and remember him (for I am sure it is male!) also if you are digging in your garden, doing any sort of tunneling or excavation. Like all elementals his main task is to protect Gaia’s interests, and if we can remember and honour this principle by seeking to co-operate not impose, life on earth could be so much easier for all of us - particularly miners.
