Heathrow, Fracking, and Saving the Planet

Awakening to the early morning news about the development of fracking and airport expansion among a number of big infrastructure projects in the UK, my heart sank as my mind immediately warned of the implications for an already busy, polluted, restless, damaged country that is getting more and more separated from the Planet. Saving the PlanetI chastised myself for my pessimism, and tried to think instead about the jobs that would be created, the benefits for the economy, about cheap energy prices and all the other wonders promised to us by successive governments, about how all building work is opposed somewhere at the time and yet we adjust and learn to love it. However hard I tried, however, I could not help thinking about the effect of the proposed developments on the lives of people living nearby, on wildlife and on the environment more widely. Even the smallest projects sometimes are more about making money and “progress” for short term gain than for the greater, long-term good. As I struggled between acceptance and concern, rather laughing at myself too for worrying about decisions that have yet to be announced, my heart and my mind settled when I remember two key points: one, that the earth and world changes I foresee may halt the biggest projects and result in a new approach to our use, and care, of our planetary resources; and secondly that nature is very strong. While we cannot manage without the Planet, she can manage very well without us - and indeed we humans have become her enemy and not her friend in the last few hundred years. She will thrive once again when we cease to undermine her well-being, voluntarily or compulsorily. Even among those who who truly care for the well-being of Gaia, there can be an arrogance of attitude that believes man has sole responsibility for her welfare. Yes, we have hurt her badly, and yes, we have a duty of care to her, but we forget sometimes that the world of nature is comprised of aspects of Spirit in a myriad of forms, and every one is more powerful and significant than you or me. They are hidden, unknown and unthought of to most of us, but they are in the tree, the mountain, the blade of grass and the bird singing in your garden. One day they will be revealed, and they will heal the lands and seas as they rebalance the scales of justice. So, I grit my teeth as I witness the ever-growing separation between humans and the environment, as fracking gets closer and Heathrow becomes more and more a concrete jungle. I care, but I trust, and I believe in the Plan of God and all that is part of it on Earth and beyond. All, therefore, is well, whatever we choose to do in our ignorance.   [byline]]]>

Do not worry or concern, as you nicely put, " All, therefore, is well".
    Love.
